Wayne Branks joined Hibiscus Coast Softball Club in the 2004/05 season, initially becoming involved as the coach of his children’s team. His commitment and enthusiasm were immediately evident, and later that same year he joined the club’s committee, beginning a long period of service to HBC.
Originally from Southland, Wayne came to the club with little prior experience in softball, yet quickly immersed himself in every aspect of the game and club life. Over the years, he took on numerous roles including coach, committee member, administrator, player, mentor, and advocate for the club. Whatever the task, Wayne could always be relied upon to step forward and contribute.
One of Wayne’s greatest contributions was the strong relationship he helped build between HBC and Orewa College. At a time when the college provided a valuable pathway for young players into the club, Wayne worked tirelessly to promote softball within the school and strengthen the connection between the two organisations. His efforts helped create opportunities for many young athletes and played an important role in the club’s growth and sustainability.
Wayne’s dedication, leadership, and countless volunteer hours made a significant impact on Hibiscus Coast Softball Club. In recognition of his outstanding service and commitment, he was awarded Life Membership in 2016, becoming the club’s third Life Member.
Although Wayne stepped down from committee duties in 2017, his contribution to the club remains highly valued. His passion for supporting players, developing opportunities, and helping the club succeed has left a lasting legacy within HBC.
