Roger Smith has been a central figure at Hibiscus Coast Softball Club since joining in 2005. Now a Life Member, Roger’s nearly two decades of service reflect a long-standing and unwavering commitment to the club and its community.
Over the years, Roger has taken on a wide range of roles, both on and off the field. He has coached across multiple age grades, contributed as a long-standing player, served as Vice President, and helped guide players through their development.
Behind the scenes, he plays a key role in player development, mentoring athletes across all levels and helping them grow both on and off the diamond.
As a player, Roger has made an enduring impact, having played over 100 premier games for HBC before his retirement in 2025. Roger’s softball journey began well before his time at HBC. He grew up playing in Wyndham, representing Eastern Southland through every junior level. He went on to play for Tawa between 1986 and 1996, represented Wellington at Under-19 level, was selected for the New Zealand Rest Team, played a season in the US before going onto represent North Harbour at the National Fastpitch Championships. He has countless number of premier caps to his name across the handful of clubs including Tawa, Island Bay, Northcote and HBC.
In 2012, Roger became HBC’s Senior Club Captain, providing steady leadership through challenging times, including delicate negotiations with the Sharks Sports Trust. Known for his calm, fair, and principled approach, Roger earned widespread respect as someone who always prioritised the good of the club.
Roger is widely regarded as a dependable, loyal, and humble presence — someone who simply gets on with the job and makes things better for those around him. His influence on the club extends beyond titles or roles; it lies in the values he brings and the example he sets. His Life Membership recognises not only his service, but also the strength and integrity he has brought to Hibiscus Coast Softball Club.
