Rob Craigie joined Hibiscus Coast Softball Club in the 2000/01 season after relocating from Southland. At the time, the club was still in its infancy, with just four junior teams and being largely managed by its founder, Stephen Ellison. Rob’s son was playing in the Under 8 grade, and Rob quickly became involved as an assistant coach while continuing his own playing career with Northcote.
Although he stepped away from playing during the 2001/02 season, Rob remained actively involved with HBC as a coach, committee member, and volunteer. His commitment to the club never wavered, and when HBC established its first senior men’s team, Rob returned to the diamond as both a player and coach, helping build a pathway for senior softball within the club.
As one of the club’s earliest and most influential members, Rob played a key role in shaping the direction and culture of HBC during its formative years. He was heavily involved in developing players, supporting coaches, and helping the club grow from a small junior-focused organisation into a club capable of competing at higher levels.
Rob’s contribution extended well beyond HBC. In the 2007/08 season, he became the club’s first senior North Harbour representative player, a milestone achievement that highlighted both his personal commitment to the sport and the growing strength of the club. The following season, he became one of HBC’s first North Harbour representative coaches, serving as assistant coach to fellow HBC member Neil Morrison. Rob later progressed to become North Harbour Head Coach for the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons.
Throughout his years with HBC, Rob was a passionate advocate for player development, senior softball, and club growth. His leadership, dedication, and willingness to contribute wherever needed helped lay many of the foundations on which the club continues to build today.
In recognition of his outstanding service and lasting contribution to Hibiscus Coast Softball Club, Rob was awarded Life Membership in 2012, becoming the club’s first Life Member. His induction recognised not only his achievements on the field, but also the countless hours he devoted to helping establish and strengthen the club during its early years.
